Young people on average drink 12.7 units of alcohol a
week ? equivalent to more than six pints of beers ?
according to data in a new study.
The Daily Telegraphy cites research by the NHS
Information Centre which also found one in five school
pupils aged between 11 and 15 ? around 640,000 children
? had consumed alcohol in the week before the survey.
However, 46% had never drunk alcohol ? up from 39% in
2003.
The data was compiled last year, with around 8,000 young
people taking part in the poll.
"These are shocking figures, reflecting a culture where
binge drinking is truly out of control,? said Liberal
Democrat shadow health secretary Norman Lamb. ?A child
drinking an average of six pints a week is likely to
suffer dreadful health consequences later in life."
