The average UK family is spending an extra ?1,100 a year
on food compared to 12 months ago, claims the Daily
Telegraph.
The paper cites research by price comparison website
mysupermarket.co.uk showing that a sample basket of 24
items at Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury?s had increased in
cost by 21% over the last year.
The news comes after the Office for National Statistics
reported yesterday (14 July) that manufacturers are
paying 30% for raw materials than a year ago.
Earlier this month The Grocer reported that supermarkets
have passed on costs totalling ?3.7bn to customers over
the last two years ? although suppliers passed on just
?3.5bn, prompting accusations from some quarters of
profiteering.
