Consumers are increasingly turning away from bottled
water, research has found.
Tests conducted by Which? found that over half of people
surveyed could not tell the difference between bottled
water and that from a tap, while 18 per cent preferred
the taste of the latter.
And the magazine added that tap water is 141 times
cheaper than the bestselling brand, with prices at 0.22p
and 31p per litre respectively.
Editor Neil Fowler commented: "The UK has some of the
safest and best-quality drinking water in the world.
It's time we started appreciating it."
He added that tap water is better for the environment,
something that over 80 per cent of respondents agreed
with.
Britons paid ?1.68 billion for bottled water in 2006 but
nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are now
drinking less than a year ago.
This week Calypso launched a range of bottled water,
which it believes will satisfy a demand for
locally-sourced products, Talking Retail reported.
